No Man’s Sky update is live now – adds multiplayer and 30 hours of story
No Man’s Sky – finally becoming the game that was originally promised

The new expansion for No Man’s Sky looks like the most extensive so far, with a new mission system and the first ever co-op options.

Hello Games promised a major new update for No Man’s Sky this week, and it looks like they’ve delivered.

Update 1.3 is called Atlas Rises and includes a brand new 30-hour story campaign, which introduces a new interdimensional race and a branching narrative that promises double the amount of lore compared to the existing game.

The plot involves ‘glitches in the simulation’ that allow up to 16 players to communicate (including proximity based voice chat) and explore together.

Hello Games are underplaying the feature though, as just a first step towards proper synchronous co-op. And if we’re reading the description right it sounds like the other players are just represented as floating orbs.

Although the backlash did go a bit overboard, the game as it was originally released was a major disappointment. But to Hello Games’ credit they’ve taken it on the chin and this and the previous updates have not only been substantial but entirely free.

You can see the full patch notes below but other new features include a revamped galaxy map, more variety in planet surfaces, a new procedurally-generated mission system, better graphics, an improved interface, terrain-editing via your multi-tool, improved low flight and space combat, and some cool-looking new spaceships.

The hints about expanding the multiplayer even further imply that this won’t be the last update, but it will be interesting to see if this is the one that finally redeems the game’s reputation.
